CVLC's Pro Bono Corner:
Kicking off 2025 by Giving Thanks for 2024
by Donald P. Tutson, Jr., CVLC's Director of Pro Bono Legal Services
2025 is lining up to be a banner year for CVLC clients. In the last year, our Pro Bono Partners from all over Connecticut increased their support for Veterans in big and meaningful ways throughout 2024. We are poised to have our many success stories continue and expand.
Right now the stack of year-end “Thank You Notes” on my desk is as high as my coffee cup! I’d like to take a moment to share some that success with you:
• Attorneys from Suisman Shapiro Attorneys-at-Law allowed us to expand our offices with a donation of space to open the Captain Matthew E. Auger USNR Office in New London. Read more.
• The team at Robinson & Cole helped numerous Veterans stay housed in a tough rental market.
• Shipman & Goodwin attorneys oversaw VA Benefits cases that aim to secure tens of thousands of dollars for disabled Veterans.
• Pullman & Comley fought successfully to have leases and contracts enforced for protect CVLC Veterans.
• Gordon Rees Scully & Mansukhani stepped up repeatedly and eagerly when security deposits were improperly retained, assuring that thousands of dollars made it back into CVLC’s Veterans’ pockets.
In addition to those highlighted, our attorneys work closely many other large and mid sized firm Partners including McCarter & English, Harris Beach Murtha, Finn Dixon & Herling, Cummings & Lockwood, Withers WorldWide, Carmody & Torrance, and so many other dedicated firms whose pro bono efforts shape the success of CVLC’s day-to-day endeavors.
Another extremely valuable aspect of CVLC’s Pro Bono Partnership network comes from our very well stocked group of solo & small firm partners. You are also getting notes from me!
• Attorney Anthony Minchella & his team from Southbury won a $40,000 CUTPA claim for an elderly veteran who hired the wrong home improvement contractor. Read his bio.
• Danbury Attorney Stephanie Nickse jumped in at the last minute to stop a disabled veteran from being evicted by working out new lease terms with the property’s new owners. Read her bio.
• Attorney Mark Healey provided impeccable service to several veterans in the Greater New Haven area seeking estate planning advice. Read his bio.
• Paul Kelly‘s Front Law Group counseled combat Veterans facing financial and housing challenges from Middletown to Hartford. Read about their firm.
• Attorney Daniel J. Horgan went above and beyond to keep a severely disabled New London County Veterans safe and stable in his home while battling complications brought on by his terminal illness. Read his bio.
CVLC’s Pro Bono Partners make up a collective that is safeguarding an entire community. Dozens of individuals and firms donate thousands of hours each year to make our Veteran clients more secure. This group of special folks makes Connecticut a better place to live for our Veterans, and in turn, for everyone.
CVLC’s Pro Bono Partnership is sure to have a spectacular 2025. We thank you all!
